Setup guide

Get started with Kavara

From sign-up to protected in under 5 minutes. No infrastructure changes, no IT ticket.

1

Sign up and open your dashboard

1 min

Go to app.kavara.io and sign in with your work email. No password — we send a magic link. Your 30-day free trial starts immediately, no card required.

Your workspace is provisioned automatically on first sign-in. You'll land on the Overview page.

2

Choose a protection mode

1 min

Go to Rollout in the dashboard. Choose your mode: Tokenize (recommended) replaces sensitive values with typed tokens before they reach the AI — the AI reasons over the token, you and your team get a real answer. Monitor observes without changing anything, useful for a first look.

TokenizeRecommended

Sensitive values are replaced with typed tokens (KAVARA-EMAIL-1) before the prompt leaves the browser. The AI reasons over the token. Kavara rehydrates real values in the response.

MonitorObserve only

Detects sensitive data and logs events to the dashboard, but doesn't modify anything. Good for a visibility-first rollout or a 1-week audit before enforcing.

RedactHigh security

Sensitive values are replaced with [REDACTED]. The AI cannot reason over the original value. Use for environments where no sensitive data should leave the device under any circumstances.

Tokenize is the right choice for most deployments. It's invisible to end users — they type normally, Kavara intercepts on the way out.

3

Generate an activation code

30 sec

Click Generate code in the Rollout page. You'll get a short alphanumeric code. Copy it — you'll paste it into the extension in the next step.

The activation code encodes your tenant ID and protection settings. It's how the extension knows which workspace it belongs to without exposing an API key.

4

Install the Chrome extension

1 min

Install Kavara from the Chrome Web Store. Once installed, click the Kavara icon in your toolbar and paste your activation code. Protection starts immediately.

The extension loads its detection models locally — the first page load on a protected AI tool may take 2–3 seconds as the ML model warms up. Subsequent loads are instant.

Verify it's working

1 min

Open Claude, ChatGPT, or Gemini. Type a message containing an email address or API key — you should see Kavara's badge appear and the value get tokenized before send. Check your dashboard Events tab to confirm the detection logged.

You can test with non-production values. A simple "my email is test@company.com" will trigger a detection.

Common questions

Does Kavara work on all AI tools?

Kavara protects Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, Mistral, Poe, You.com, Grok, and Google AI Mode in Search. We add new tools as they emerge.

Does my team need individual accounts?

No. You generate one activation code per rollout configuration and distribute it to your team. Each extension install registers against your workspace automatically.

What happens when the 30-day trial ends?

Existing enrolled installs keep working. New installs can't be activated until you're on a paid plan. You'll receive a reminder email 7 days before your trial ends.

Does Kavara see my employees' prompts?

No. Detection and tokenization happen entirely on-device, inside the browser extension. Only metadata reaches Kavara's servers — the data category (e.g. "credentials"), a count, and which AI tool was used. The content of prompts never leaves the machine.

Can I deploy via MDM?

Yes. The extension supports managed configuration via Chrome's managed_storage API. Contact us for the MDM schema and pre-configuration guide.

What's the impact on performance?

Detection adds under 200ms to the first send after the ML model loads. Subsequent sends are faster. The model runs locally in the extension's offscreen document — it does not make network requests for classification.
